A key site in the redevelopment of the Brooklyn waterfront, the Atlantic Basin represents a unique opportunity to introduce new marine activity on the East River. Development proposals should leverage the locational advantages of the Site, provide local marine-based economic development opportunities that coordinate with surrounding planned development, and establish new public access points to the waterfront. Red Hook Beach if built will be part of a larger development for the economic renewal of Atlantic Basin. Red Hook Beach will be approx 1 acre; there will also be 1 acre of public park space and playground adjacent to beach and the green-way extending down from Empire Fulton Ferry State Park and the Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The overall effort is driven by Mr Durst's & Mr Fox’s long term commitment to ecologically sound and community friendly development. A key design criterion is to keep traditional maritime industries on the waterfront. Tom also wants to expand the space in the neighborhood available artists and crafts-people.
